Swiss startup Proton announced the availability of its end-to-end encrypted email app for macOS and Windows, as well as a beta version for Linux. The company said the Proton Mail app was built to work seamlessly on Macs, with support for syncing themes with the desktop’s light or dark mode, displaying native notifications, and switching instantly between email and calendar.
The new Proton Mail app builds on ten years of hardening the security of our web app.
As a result, the main Proton Mail features for Windows and macOS include zero-access encryption and end-to-end encryption, protection against trackers and phishing attempts, and Proton Sentinel, a high-security account protection program. Proton says:
Being able to access email and calendar using an app instead of a browser provides additional security benefits, such as protecting emails or events from malicious browser extensions and enabling automatic updates without relying on a browser.
In addition, there is an Easy Switch tool in the app that lets users import messages from Outlook or Gmail, forward new messages from Gmail, and more. The company says:
Anyone who has used our web app before will feel right at home.
Users with a paid Proton account can download the Proton Mail app from the company’s website. The company also offers Proton free-plan users a 14-day trial period.
