For some time, WhatsApp has been testing support for security keys internally in its iPhone app. Most users, however, did not have the option available. As Meta gradually rolls out the security key option for WhatsApp users, it now seems to be available to everyone in the latest version of the app.
What security keys are and how to
enable them in WhatsApp
The FIDO Alliance worked with major companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft to develop a technology called Security Key. This option allows users to use secure methods such as facial recognition or biometrics to log in, removing the need to create and type a password.
Although iOS 16 added support for Apple’s security keys, iOS 17 allowed integration in third-party apps. You can use iCloud Keychain or a compatible password manager such as 1Password to sync the security key.
To enable security keys for your WhatsApp account, follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp
- Go to Settings
- Tap Account
- Choose Security Keys
- Tap Create Security Key
- Confirm with Face ID or Touch ID
Why use security keys in WhatsApp
Security key verification makes logging in to WhatsApp easier and protects your account more securely. This is a way to keep users safe, says Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s head of product.
We are excited to roll this out in WhatsApp and give users an extra layer of security, she said.
With security keys, you no longer need to worry about forgetting or losing your WhatsApp password. By using authentication methods that are unique to you, you can also prevent anyone from accessing your account without your permission.
