Apple is preparing to launch AirTag 2 in mid-2025. Although early rumours suggested a 2024 release, production was delayed to ensure significant improvements, especially in location tracking, privacy, and integration with new devices such as Vision Pro.
One of the most anticipated updates is the inclusion of the second-generation advanced UWB chip. This chip, already present in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9, will allow AirTag 2 to achieve much greater tracking accuracy, increasing the range from 10 meters to around 60 meters. This should significantly improve the “Precision Finding” feature to help locate lost items more easily.

Expanded focus on privacy

Since the launch of the first AirTag, security concerns have emerged, especially regarding misuse for unauthorised tracking. With AirTag 2, Apple is expected to introduce new privacy features, including improvements to the notification system that alerts when an unauthorised AirTag is nearby. The goal is to minimise the risk of privacy invasion and misuse.

In addition to technical improvements, AirTag 2 is expected to be designed for seamless integration with Vision Pro, Apple’s augmented reality device. This link should strengthen the company’s “spatial computing” ecosystem, enabling interactive tracking experiences that go beyond traditional location features.

Despite the advances, there are no plans to replace the current button battery (CR2032) with a rechargeable one. Apple believes that keeping a replaceable battery remains the most practical solution for this device.

AirTag 2, code-named B589, is scheduled for release in 2025, possibly in the second quarter of the year. In the meantime, the first-generation AirTag remains a solid option for item tracking. The current model costs 39 euros for a single unit and 129 euros for a four-pack. The price of the new model is expected to reflect the improvements introduced.
