Apple acquires DarwinAI to boost artificial intelligence in iOS 18

According to Bloomberg, Apple has expanded its artificial intelligence team with the acquisition of Canadian company DarwinAI earlier this year. DarwinAI developed AI technology to inspect components during the manufacturing process and also focuses on shrinking and improving the efficiency of AI systems. After being acquired by Apple, DarwinAI’s website and social media accounts were taken offline.

DarwinAI: a company specialised

in generative AI

A group of researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada founded DarwinAI in 2017. The company created a platform called Generative Synthesis, which uses deep learning algorithms to compress and optimise neural networks. The platform allows the creation of faster and more accurate AI models that can run on devices with limited resources, such as smartphones or low-power mobile devices.

DarwinAI also applied its generative AI technology in several areas, such as quality inspection in the automotive industry, anomaly detection in medical imaging and sentiment analysis in voice and text. Lockheed Martin, Audi and Intel are some of the major clients the company worked with.

Apple: a giant in search of

AI innovation

In recent years, Apple has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, becoming one of the biggest tech companies in this field. The company has acquired more than 30 AI firms in the last two years, more than Microsoft and Google. Apple has all the pieces it needs to compete in the AI race.

The company is committed to developing AI features for the upcoming iOS 18 and macOS 15 operating systems and needs to integrate generative AI across its product line if it wants to compete with Microsoft’s Bing, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other generative AI offerings. It is testing large language models, and soon Shortcuts, Messages, Apple Music and Siri will gain AI-powered features.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has promised that the company will “break new ground” in generative AI by 2024.

We believe it will unlock transformative opportunities for our users, Cook said
