Apple has responded to developers demands and announced changes to App Store rules in the EU. These changes include support for alternative app marketplaces, new business terms and in-app purchase options.

Web Distribution

One of the most notable improvements is the new “Web Distribution” feature, which allows developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from their own website. This means iPhone users can visit a developer’s site and download an app without using the App Store or any alternative app marketplace.

To use this feature, developers must accept the new App Store business terms. This means they must pay a €0.50 Core Technology Fee for each first annual install that exceeds one million installs over the previous twelve months. To protect the integrity of the platform, all apps distributed online must follow Apple’s guidelines. Only the registered domain of a developer’s website in App Store Connect can install the apps. In addition, developers will have access to a range of APIs that Apple will provide for integration with system features.

The company says this feature requires “responsibility and oversight of the user experience, including the ability to manage apps and provide customer support and refunds.” After meeting specific requirements to protect users, Apple will authorise developers to distribute their apps from their own site.

Linking to external pages

Finally, Apple is giving developers more autonomy by allowing links to an external page to complete a digital transaction for goods or services. The Cupertino company says developers have the option to create promotions, discounts and other offers on their own, instead of using Apple’s templates and rules. This change takes effect immediately.
