According to a recent report from The Information, Apple is still exploring foldable iPhone designs.

The publication states that since 2018 the company has been studying foldable iPhones and iPads, and currently has at least two active foldable iPhone prototypes.

FOLDABLE IPHONE IN
EARLY DEVELOPMENT

Do not expect the new foldable iPhone to launch soon, as it is said to be in the early stages of development. The report says Apple is also working on a larger foldable iPad, although it has run into problems with the iPhone design.

Recently, the Cupertino company reportedly spoke with Asian manufacturers about component orders for a foldable iPhone in two sizes. However, if the final product does not meet Apple’s design standards, the project may be cancelled, according to The Information.

Engineering and design challenges

The information indicates that the industrial design team wanted to develop a device that would be half the thickness of current iPhone models so it would not be too thick when closed. They also considered adding outward-facing displays so users could see information when the device was shut. On the other hand, the practical reality of components such as batteries and screens made it difficult from an engineering standpoint to reach these ambitious goals.

According to The Information, Apple decided to postpone the foldable iPhone project in 2020 and instead focus on a foldable iPad the size of an iPad mini. This device would have a screen of around eight inches and, compared with a phone form factor, an iPad requires less maintenance and, since it usually does not fit in a pocket, can be thicker.

Goal of sustainable, clean energy

The company wants the device to lie completely flat so people can interact with the screen and use it freely with accessories such as the Apple Pencil.

It is not clear whether Apple has managed to solve these issues, so do not expect a dual or foldable Apple device, at least for the iPhone 16 and 17. The company had previously indicated plans to build a foldable for 2025, but it appears that has been pushed back.
