Apple has developed a chip equivalent to four M2 Ultras for the Apple Car.

Apple Car: what we know about the company’s cancelled project

Although Apple is known as one of the most inventive and disruptive companies in the world, not all of its projects reach the market. One of the best-known examples is the Apple Car, the electric and autonomous car the company developed for ten years but ultimately cancelled last month. Let’s look at what we know about the Apple Car, its problems, its goals and its future prospects.

A chip equivalent to four

M2 Ultras

The Apple Car’s artificial intelligence system, powered by a custom chip from the Cupertino company, was one of the most impressive aspects of the vehicle. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, this chip would have power comparable to four M2 Ultras. The M2 Ultra has 134 billion transistors and features a 24-core CPU, a GPU with up to 76 cores and a dedicated 32-core Neural Engine. The latest generation of Mac Studio and Mac Pro uses the M2 Ultra. The Apple Car chip could handle Level 5 autonomous driving, the most advanced and challenging level, with no human intervention.

A decade of research and development

Tim Cook launched the Apple Car project in 2014, and over the past ten years the company tested a variety of ideas and prototypes. According to recent information, the company was in talks with Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Volkswagen, McLaren and Tesla to build the Apple car. However, Apple executives reconsidered the project and chose a less ambitious approach because of the difficulties involved in building a fully autonomous car, which had been the company’s goal. Even so, building a vehicle still seemed too complex a task for Apple, and the company shut down Project Titan last month, a project that cost Apple around 1 billion dollars per year.

The end of the Apple Car or just a pause?

Even though the project was cancelled, many fans and analysts still believe Apple has not completely abandoned the idea of entering the automotive market. Some argue that the company may resume the project when the infrastructure and technology mature further, while others suggest Apple may develop mobility-related products or services using the engineering and know-how from the project. For example, the company could expand the features of its in-car integration system CarPlay, or license its artificial intelligence chip to other car manufacturers.
