Apple ID may be renamed to “Apple Account”
Apple appears to plan a significant rebrand of Apple ID, renaming it to “Apple Account”. According to sources familiar with Apple’s business, the company is working on the new name, which may launch later this year.
What is an
Apple ID?
Users with an Apple ID account can access services such as the App Store and iCloud. For more than ten years, they have been able to create and sign in with an Apple ID across all Apple platforms. They can shop in the Cupertino company’s online store, buy apps and music, sync data wirelessly between devices using iCloud and much more.
WHY THE NAME CHANGE?
The launch of iOS 18 (codename Crystal) and macOS 15 (codename Glow) at the end of 2024 is expected to replace the Apple ID name with Apple Account. If the company decides to move ahead with the new branding, system apps and Apple’s website will change to reflect it.
So far, it is not clear why Apple is considering this change, and it is important to remember that the company often keeps several marketing names in play before it launches new products or services. For example, it used three different names for the operating system of the newly released Vision Pro headset: realityOS, xrOS and visionOS. As a result, it is possible that the Apple Account brand never becomes a reality.
