To download iOS 17.3.1 on compatible iPhones and iPads over Wi-Fi, go to Settings > General > Software Update. According to Apple’s release notes, the update includes a fix for an issue that may cause text to duplicate or overlap unexpectedly as you type.
Some users who used the iOS 17 keyboard to type in apps such as Messages, Notes and Mail were affected by the text bug. The text entered could duplicate or overlap other text, which made reading and editing more difficult. Apple acknowledged the issue and promised a quick fix.
iOS 17.3.1 resolves this problem and also improves the operating system’s performance and stability. In addition, this update includes security enhancements and fixes for other minor bugs.
iOS 17.3 introduced Stolen Device Protection
iOS 17.3, the most recent update before this one, came out in January 2024 and added a new feature called Stolen Device Protection. This feature lets users lock their devices remotely in case of loss or theft, which prevents them from being restored or reactivated without the iCloud password.
iOS 17.3 also added new emojis, collaborative playlists in Apple Music, transcripts in Apple Podcasts and AirPlay for hotel TVs. That update laid the groundwork for the launch of next-generation CarPlay later this year.
iOS 17.4 will launch in March with new features and changes
The Cupertino company confirmed that the release of iOS 17.4 in March will bring several new features and adjustments to the iPhone. The Capture button, App Store changes in the EU, SharePlay for HomePod and new apps for CarPlay are the main highlights.
Before the launch of iOS 18, planned for September 2024, iOS 17.4 will be the latest version of iOS 17. Journalist Mark Gurman says iOS 18 has the potential to be the biggest software update in the iPhone’s history.
