Today, Apple started to roll out a firmware update for its AirTag item trackers. The firmware build number is 2A73 (2.0.73), higher than firmware 2A61, which came out last October. Apple does not provide release notes for AirTag firmware updates, and the support document is not yet updated for this latest release, so there is still no information about what the update includes.
AirTag updates: today’s firmware
release will roll out in stages
The update goes out to one percent of users today, then rises to ten percent of users on March 26. It reaches 25% of users on April 2, and it becomes available to everyone on April 9.
You cannot force an AirTag update, because it happens over the air through a paired iPhone.
To give the update the best chance to install, you can keep the AirTag near your iPhone, then wait for the firmware to arrive on your device. With the help of my guide, you can use the Find My app to check the current firmware version of your AirTag:
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap the Items tab.

-
Tap the AirTag you want to check in the list.
-
Tap the AirTag’s name to view the current firmware version.
