macOS Sequoia and iCloud Support for Virtual Machines

The macOS Sequoia virtualization framework is being improved by Apple to allow Mac users to sign in to iCloud on virtual machines (VMs) running macOS 15 or later. For those who want to sync their apps with iCloud and for developers who need to test iCloud features, this update is especially useful.

macOS Virtualisation

This capability will be available on Apple CPUs but comes with some limitations. Developers who want to run older versions of macOS in a virtual machine, or who want to upgrade existing VMs to newer versions, will not be able to get iCloud working. Only VMs created from a macOS 15 image (.ipsw file) will be able to use Apple Account related services. The virtualization documentation explains:

When you create a VM on macOS 15… Virtualization configures an identity for the VM that is derived from the security information in the host’s Enclave.

Parallels and VMware provide virtualization apps, and Broadcom recently made VMware Fusion free for personal use. macOS Sequoia is currently in developer beta, and a public beta is only expected in July, followed by a final release in the autumn.
