What to expect from Apple’s new iMac M4

Apple plans to update the 24-inch iMac with the M4 chip, the same one used in the latest iPad Pro models. The M4 iMac is expected to be smarter, faster and more efficient than the current M3 iMac.

M4 chip

The second-generation M4 chip uses the same 3-nanometer technology as the M3 but improves its speed and efficiency. The M4 has performed up to 25% faster than the M3 in Geekbench benchmark tests, showing a significant performance boost. The M4 chip has a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, with six efficiency cores and four performance cores. The M4 iMac will be one of the first Copilot+ PCs with hardware focused on artificial intelligence.

Design

Since the iMac redesign in 2021, no new look has been introduced. The M4 iMac will likely focus on internal components rather than changes to the external design. The iMac is an all-in-one machine that works as both a computer and a display. It has a slim profile that fits easily on a desk and is only 11.5 mm thick.

Larger iMac?

There are persistent rumors about a larger iMac with a 30-inch or bigger display. However, development of that device is still at an early stage, and no one knows when it will launch. Although we might see it sometime in 2025, it almost certainly will not arrive in 2024. Since the 27-inch model was discontinued in 2022, Apple will keep the 24-inch iMac this year.

Release date

In April, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the 24-inch iMac is likely to receive the M4 chip upgrade “around the end of the year.” Apple usually holds events in October or November for new Mac launches, so we can expect the new iMac around that time. In addition, the company from Cupertino expects to update the MacBook Pro and Mac mini models before the end of the year.
