Apple releases new AirTag 2 Firmware Update: Version 3.0.49 now available

Apple has started rolling out a new firmware update for the second-generation AirTag, bringing the device to version 3.0.49. This new release replaces firmware version 3.0.45 and marks the second firmware update issued for the AirTag 2 since its launch.

What is new in AirTag 2 firmware

3.0.49?

For now, the exact changes remain unknown. Apple’s official support page still lists AirTag Firmware Update 3.0.45 as the latest documented version, with that update described as improving the unwanted tracking sound so users can more easily locate an unknown AirTag during Precision Finding. The same update also included bug fixes and other improvements.

This makes version 3.0.49 more of a maintenance release for now, at least until Apple publishes the official changelog. The update is likely designed to improve stability, reliability and the overall performance of the tracker in the background.

The previous firmware version is still relevant because it focused on one of the most sensitive parts of the AirTag experience: unwanted tracking protection. Apple improved the sound emitted by an unknown AirTag, making it easier to physically locate the device when Precision Finding is used.

A different rollout strategy for AirTag 2

One detail that stands out is the way Apple appears to distribute this firmware. With the original AirTag, firmware updates were often rolled out gradually over a period of around two weeks. For AirTag 2, Apple seems to push the update to all users at roughly the same time.

This change may reduce the delay between users and help more AirTag 2 units move to the latest firmware faster. For a device tied to object location, privacy alerts and the Find My network, faster update availability can be useful, especially when fixes relate to safety or reliability.

Can you update an AirTag 2 manually?

No. Apple does not offer a manual update button for AirTag firmware.

The update installs automatically over the air through the paired iPhone. To receive the latest firmware, the AirTag 2 must be within Bluetooth range of the iPhone. Apple also notes that AirTag firmware updates are delivered periodically when the tracker is near the iPhone.

In practical terms, users only need to keep the AirTag close to their iPhone and wait for the update to install automatically.

How to check your AirTag firmware version

To check the firmware version installed on your AirTag 2:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone
  2. Tap the Items tab.
  3. Select your AirTag from the list.
  4. Tap the AirTag name.
  5. The serial number and firmware version will appear on screen.

If the version shown is 3.0.49, the latest firmware has already been installed. If it still shows 3.0.45, keep the AirTag close to your iPhone and check again later.
