Apple AirPods 5 arrive with active noise cancelation on both versions, enhanced sound quality and costs from $129. The new earbuds were announced on September 9, 2026 and will be available tomorrow on September 18.
The major modification is to the entry-level model. ANC is now standard equipment. The AirPods 4 kept this feature for the more expensive version. Now Apple has two options, but they are distinguished by battery life, controls and charging capability. They both include revamped internal parts and enhanced Personalized Spatial Audio.
More Effective Noise Cancellation
Apple says AirPods 5 can suppress up to 50% more outside noise than AirPods 4 with ANC This is a manufacturer’s claim and actual outcomes will vary depending on conditions of use.
Adaptive Audio automatically tunes the balance between noise cancelation and Transparency mode. The latter has also been improved for a more natural sound of close speech and sounds.
Conversation Awareness reduces the volume during playback when the user starts to speak so that conversations are easier without having to take off the earbuds.
Upgraded Sound and Live Translation
The revised acoustic architecture and improved Adaptive EQ are designed to create a richer, more detailed sound. Personalized Spatial Audio also gets a small tweak.
Live Translation is supported on AirPods 5 when connected to a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence activated. This function is consequently device-dependent and subject to device compatibility constraints.
