Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: new features and comparison

The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 highlight Apple’s emphasis on health, physical recovery, and artificial intelligence. Both share the S11 chip and new health features, but differ in battery life, materials and intended use. Announced September 9, 2026. Both are set for release tomorrow, on September 18.

Health and Recovery with the New Sensor System

The new Health Sensing System performs a heart rate measurement every five seconds. Collecting data more often gives a better picture of activity and helps follow changes throughout the day.

Then there’s Readiness, which takes into account the recent activity, training load, vital indicators and sleep data. It gives you a number from zero to ten and tips on how ready you are for the day ahead. As additional data becomes available, the assessment is updated, as described in Apple’s Series 12 announcement..

Information comes from Apple’s announcements for the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Battery life varies with use and settings.

Apple Watch Series 12: Material Choices and Fast Charging

The Series 12 comes in numerous styles, including aluminum, polished titanium and ceramic. Aluminum models now use Ceramic Shield 2 front glass.

There’s a mention of charging, too, with Apple claiming 15 minutes of charging will give you up to 12 hours more use. That tweak is helpful for people who track sleep and wear their watch all day to fit in brief charging pauses during the day.

Apple Watch Ultra 4: Battery Life for Longer Activities

The Ultra 4’s battery life is one of its key draws. Apple rates regular use for up to 50 hours, and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode.

Extended Workout Mode provides up to 25 hours of GPS and heart rate measurements for outdoor workouts. Max Extended Workout mode can last up to 45 hours, albeit some metrics and notifications are disabled. These modes change the operation of the watch so that the numbers do not reflect the same conditions of use.

Audio Intelligence: Sounds, Transcriptions, and Summaries

Audio Intelligence provides recognition of doorbells, alarms and a baby’s cries. Live Rewind gives customers the ability to examine a transcript of the last 15 seconds of chat.

Siri Recap makes summaries with titles and highlights. This capability will emerge in beta later this year, initially in English. Don’t expect other languages support at launch.

Which Should You Choose?

Given the announced differences, the Apple Watch Series 12 is probably the superior option for individuals who desire daily health monitoring, frequent activity capabilities, and a greater selection of sizes and materials.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is better suited for people who care about battery life and conduct long outdoor activities. When choosing your case, think about how long you usually work out, how comfortable it feels on your wrist, and your budget.
